There are several lovely things about autumn, and we are fortunate to be able to enjoy so many of them right here in Lincoln. (Especially considering our close proximity to one of Nebraska’s favorite pastimes – football!) Yet fall just isn’t complete without a trip back to the farm for a walk through crunchy cornstalks, and a good night’s sleep to the hum of a grain drying fan.
Last week we were able to take a day off and head home to help out with harvest. And by “we” helped, of course I mean Kelly. I spent half of the day behind a camera and the other half enjoying a ride along in the combine, while he assisted with driving the tractor and unloading trailers-full of corn. As much as I love it when my husband suits up with a jacket and tie, it warms my heart to see him sporting blue jeans and boots. Especially when I think about the fact that he only learned the ins and outs of taking on the role of “Assistant Farmer” since marrying me. (Although I’m pretty sure the correct title would actually be Assistant-to-the-Farmer for any of you who watch The Office.)
As for my time behind a camera, I was working on a project that I finally began last spring (which I’ve been thinking about for years). It’s still in the early stages and won’t be ready any time soon, but thankfully I was able to make a little progress while we were back home.
These next few images are part of my second undertaking for the day. Lately I’ve been focusing on relying more on my iPhone for personal photography. Of course the quality doesn’t compare to our professional equipment, but it’s a fun challenge and helps ensure that our own every-day images don’t fall victim to the photographer’s curse of never getting to be first on the priority list.
Here’s to another year of harvest in the books!
